Dr. Padma Subrahmanyam is very talented. She is a dancer, scholar, and choreographer. She also sings, composes music, and teaches. She is an author and an expert in Indic studies.

Her father was Director K. Subrahmanyam. He was a famous film maker and freedom fighter. He was also important in the cultural world. Dr. Padma has a Music degree. She also has a degree in Ethno Musicology. Her Ph.D is about "Karanas in Indian Dance & Sculpture." She connects theory and practice.

Dr. Padma is the President of Nrithyodaya. Her father started this dance school in 1942. She is also a Managing Trustee. This is for the Bharata-Ilango Foundation for Asian Culture (BIFAC). BIFAC studies performing arts in Asia.

She is a Managing Trustee of another group. It is the Director K. Subrahmanyam Memorial Trust. She is also a Trustee of two other centers. These are the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA) and Bharat Bhavan. Bharat Bhavan is in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh.

She works with some Universities. She is now the Programme Director at SASTRA University. She directs BFA & MFA Distance Education Courses in Bharatanatyam. She also directs the Ph.D program.

She has won about 130 awards. These are from both India and other countries. They include Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan. She also won the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award. She received the Akademi Ratna from the President of India.

She is the only Indian classical dancer to win a special award. It is the Fukuoka Asian Cultural Award from Japan. She won for helping development and harmony in Asia. She was also made an Honorary Fellow. This was by the Asiatic Society of Mumbai. It was founded in 1804.

IGNCA made a long movie about her. It is about her work with the Karanas. The movie is on the IGNCA Facebook page. She still dances a lot. She tours in India and other countries.
