Bharatanatyam Costume Guide

Everything you need to choose the perfect Bharatanatyam costume — silk types, colours, measurements, jewellery, and timelines. Written by our master tailors with over 57 years of experience.

How to Choose a Bharatanatyam Costume

Six decisions that determine the perfect fit, look, and timeline.

01

Choose Your Occasion

Your occasion determines everything — fabric weight, ornamentation level, and budget. An arangetram (debut performance) deserves full silk with complete temple jewellery. Stage recitals can use semi-silk. Practice sessions suit lighter, washable materials.

02

Pick the Right Silk

Kanchipuram pure silk is the benchmark — heavy, lustrous, and rich under lights. Mysore silk gives a fine drape at a lighter weight. Art silk (polyester zari) is budget-friendly but looks noticeably different in professional photos. For your once-in-a-lifetime arangetram, pure silk is worth it.

03

Select a Colour

Stage lighting amplifies warm, saturated colours. Red, peacock green, royal blue, and deep magenta are enduring choices that photograph beautifully. Pale pastels and whites wash out completely under spotlights. Most importantly — confirm with your guru. Many bharatanatyam lineages have specific colour traditions for arangetrams.

04

Get Accurate Measurements

Four numbers determine fit: bust (fullest chest circumference), natural waist, full hip, and standing height. Measure over regular inner-wear, not a bra or sports-top. For growing children, add 2–3 cm to bust and hip if the performance is 6 or more months away.

05

Plan Your Timeline

Custom stitching takes 3–4 weeks once measurements are confirmed. In peak arangetram season (October–February), we recommend 6–8 weeks. International orders need an additional 7–14 days for shipping. Place your order at least 10 weeks before performance day for peace of mind.

06

Complete the Jewellery Set

The costume is only half the picture. A full arangetram set includes: rakodi (head ornament), nethichutti (forehead drop), jimikki (ear drops), necklace and chain, valayal (bangles), oddiyanam (waist belt), and silambu (ankle bells). Temple jewellery in antique gold-finish is traditional and the most widely photographed style.

Measurement Quick Reference

Use a soft tailor's tape. Measure in regular clothes, not bulky outerwear.

HipFullest part of the hips and seat, usually 20–23 cm below the natural waist.

Frequently Asked Questions

What type of silk is best for a Bharatanatyam arangetram costume?

Kanchipuram pure silk is the gold standard for arangetrams — it has a heavy, rich drape and deep lustre that photographs beautifully under stage lighting. Mysore silk is a lighter alternative with an equally fine finish. Art silk is acceptable for regular performances but looks noticeably different under professional lighting.

How long does it take to stitch a Bharatanatyam costume?

Custom stitching takes 3–4 weeks from the date measurements are confirmed. During peak arangetram season (October to February), allow 6–8 weeks. We recommend ordering at least 8 weeks before the performance date to allow for fittings and adjustments.

What measurements do I need for a custom Bharatanatyam costume?

You will need: bust (around the fullest part of the chest), waist (natural waist, not hips), hip (fullest part), shoulder width, and full height. For children, include the current age and an extra 2–3 cm if the performance is more than 6 months away.

Can I order a Bharatanatyam costume from outside India?

Yes. Shanthi Tailors ships worldwide. International orders ship via courier and typically arrive in 7–14 business days after the costume is ready. We ship to the US, UK, Canada, Australia, Singapore, Malaysia, and over 40 other countries.

What jewellery is needed for a Bharatanatyam arangetram?

A complete arangetram jewellery set includes: rakodi (head ornament), jimikki (ear drops), nethichutti (forehead piece), necklace (adigai or long chain), valayal (bangles), oddiyanam (waist belt), and silambu (ankle bells). Temple jewellery in antique gold finish is traditional and most widely worn.

What colours are best for a Bharatanatyam stage costume?

Vibrant colours perform best under stage lighting: red, peacock green, royal blue, magenta, and orange are classic choices. Avoid pale yellows, light pinks, and whites — they wash out under spotlights. Many gurus have specific colour traditions; always confirm with yours before ordering.
